Visually Interactive Package for Management and Accounting of Investment
Microsoft Excel is mostly used to calculate investment records and also to generate reports and graphical display. However, it has to be done manually by specifying the relevant formula for each item. For more comprehensive calculation, reporting and graphical display, it is rather time consuming to implement especially the verification of all the output data against the respective formula. VipMai_83 is thus developed to assist investors to dynamically manage and to automate the accounts and reporting for shares and forex trading. Through the built-in facilities for automatic web real-time access on price/rate and the structured database to display the historical data, the user can be more up-to-date to know each individual and overall position and can therefore make a better decision. VipMai-83 is divided into five modules, namely share investment, forex investment, web on-line prices, database management, and chart and statistic.
The share investment module allows the user to keep a real-time record of all the shares in-hand for each project ID. The project IDs could be CPF, annual saving, wife saving, special fund A, B, etc. The real time record keeps the real-time price of each holding share, purchase price, date of purchase, quantity, brokerage charges, etc for each trading record. It also calculates break-even price, potential profit, target profit for each individual share and the overall position for each project ID. There are five sub modules, namely real-time operation, dividend, profit summary, transaction done and price updating and reporting.
Facilities are provided for the user to buy/sell a share, auto-update of price from web, enter dividend and to automatically generate various reports. It calculates and builds database for potential profit (PP), profit from transaction done (PD) and the summing-up of PP and PD as total potential profit (TP) for each day and for each project ID, which can also be dynamically plotted in various graphs. Under the real time operation, the user may vary the target price and the system will show the profits of the selected trading record and all the trading record within the same share as well as the total potential profit of under the whole project ID. Part of sample reports are listed in Tables 1 to 3.

Slightly different from share, there is no project ID and all the trading records are grouped under one sub-folder but divided under currency ID and source ID. In addition, the system will group all the trading records under the user specified interval and generate additional sub-folders such as Yr2003, Jan-Jul2004, etc. Similar to share, there are four sub-modules, namely real-time operation, transaction done, profit summary and exchange rate update and reporting. There is no brokerage charge but it has to calculate interest. Similar facilities are provided for the user to buy/sell a particular currency, auto-web update of exchange rate and the calculation of PP, PD and TP for each day grouped under each type of currency and each source ID. Each type of profit divided into profit from exchange rate and profit from interest rate can also be dynamically plotted in various graphs. Part of sample reports are listed in Tables 4 and 5.

This module allows the user to view the real-time Singapore share market for a list of user-specified shares with option to link to either www.sgx.com or www.listedcompany.com. The user may also view the DJ index and the three Singapore shares listed in New York by linking to www.nyse.com expressed in US dollars as well as converted to Singapore dollars by the real-time exchange rate. The user may also select to view the forex bid and ask prices for up to 10 currency using Singapore dollar as base by linking to www.OZForex.com . This module allows the user to set up structured database for the historical data for share price and for exchange rate. Facilities are provided for the user to download historical daily share price and volume traded for each share ID from http://finance.yahoo.com and for daily currency prices from http://fx.sauder.ubc.ca (university of Columbia). The create database option allows the user to convert the downloaded file in their respective formats to a VipMai_83 database. After conversion, all the daily prices of the user specified shares are stored in one structured file per year, e.g. Share2003.dbf stores all share prices year 2003 and share2004.dbf for all share prices up to year 2004. Similarly one file per year stores all the daily exchange rates for all the user specified currencies. Built-in facilities are also provided for the system to update automatically these two files whenever the user runs share or forex module so that the requirement to download and conversion can be minimized. This module provides options for the user to display the daily historical prices or the daily profit summary. For each display, the user may select up to four years and for each year up to 6 different items, e.g. daily price of a specific share, exchange rate of a specified currency, specific pp, pd, tp, etc to be displayed on the same chart but up to a maximum of 12 curves within a chart. Special built-in facilities enable the user to zoom and select part of the chart and the display will be adjusted accordingly in a larger scale based on the selected duration on the x-axis and also on the y-axis. 6.
